520 _a The aim of our project is to use our engineering knowledge for the betterment of humanity. The stair climbing wheel chair aims provide barrier free movement to the handicapped people. The robot would be capable of moving on curbs and climb up and down stairs. A single cylinder gasoline engine is used to drive the prototype wheel chair. The triangular plate design of wheels makes it very suitable for climbing stairs as compared to the ordinary wheels due to greater gripping and stepping mechanism. To avoid any turnover of the chair during ascending or descending stairs the centre of gravity is kept parallel to the line of action of force which decreases the moment arm. A prototype is built to check the feasibility of the proposed design of a stair climbing wheel chair in this project. The results verify the idea showing the desired results.
