520 _aDrilling process is one of the major cutting processes in machining. It is very important to monitor different aspects or parameters involved for the sake of avoiding tool wear, tool failure, increasing machine utilization and decreasing production cost in an automated manufacturing environment. Because of the diversity of material compositions, density and thickness, the detection of breakthrough is quite difficult, but indeed essential. In literature, a number of breakthrough detection and control techniques have been investigated for surgeries in medical science. The automatic drill develop by us as a final year BE project is capable of detecting the change in material composition (breakthrough detection) and additionally overload, if any is protected. Overload protection feature increases the life of drill bit and saves it from wear and failure. The load sensor has been used for detection and micro controller has been used for data acquisition and control purpose.
