During the recent decades, pronounced interest has focused on energy crisis and air pollution. The fossil fuels of the planet earth are depleting very rapidly. Since the fossil fuels are non-renewable and takes millions of year to form again therefore it has become increasingly important for us to fight the energy crisis and air pollution. The solution to this problem exists in finding and developing greener and environment friendly alternative energy sources so that the dwindling reserves of crude oil and fossil fuels may be conserved. Gasoline is primarily used as a transportation fuel. The best alternative for gasoline is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The aim of this project is to analyze the exhaust gases of an IC engine. The engine is first run on pure gasoline and then on Compressed Natural Gas. By using a gas sensors array, the major toxic gases emitting from the exhaust of the car like Carbon dioxide (CO2), Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Nitrogen monoxide (NO), Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and Ozone (O3) are monitored and analyzed for both fuels. The sensors are interfaced with a computer through data acquisition (DAQ). The results obtained for both fuels show that CNG is less harmful to the environment than pure gasoline.
